The 2020 Titan impresses with a serene cabin and its standard set of outrageously comfy «Zero Gravity» front seats, as Nissan calls them. Good-looking premium materials are reserved for the Platinum Reserve trim. Unfortunately, the Titan’s interior design is dull, the abundance of plastic disappoints, and the crew cab’s rear-seat legroom is the least of all of its competitors. When it comes to cargo control, the Titan is one of the best in the biz. Every model has a spring-assisted tailgate for easy use, and innovative add-ons such as a unique bed-channel system and discreet in-bed cargo boxes are available. However, its ample interior storage space disappoints when it comes to finding a spot for smaller items, and its cargo boxes have the least amount of storage space among rivals. The Titan’s three bed lengths are specific to cab size: 8.2 feet for the regular cab, 6.6 feet for the extended cab, and the crew cab uses a 5.6-foot bed.

Overview

Not that anyone was asking for it, but Nissan’s Titan XD pickup truck sits between regular duty and heavy-duty pickup trucks on the workhorse spectrum but doesn’t quite hit the mark. Its towing and payload capacities aren’t much higher than what buyers might find on the Ford F-150, Ram 1500, or Chevrolet Silverado, but the Titan XD’s driving dynamics, fuel economy, and ride height are in line with the Ford F-250, the Ram 2500, and the Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD. The Nissan is powered by a 400-hp 5.6-liter V-8 and comes standard with four-wheel drive and a spacious cabin that offers some of the most comfortable seats on the market. But its rivals are simply better doing the jobs that trucks do, and we imagine most heavy-duty truck buyers are willing to sacrifice some comfort for heightened capability.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

A practical but uninspired dash design doesn’t help the Titan XD stand out in this segment. The leather appointments in our Pro-4X test truck gussied up the interior, while the topmost Platinum Reserve model features fancier two-tone leather and open-pore wood trim. Nissan’s excellent Zero Gravity front and rear seats stole the show with their perfect balance of support and comfort, especially on long road trips. The Titan XD, which is offered solely in crew-cab configuration, can hold the most carry-on-sized suitcases behind the front seats in its class, and its low lift-over height helps when loading cargo into the bed. However, its cargo boxes are among the smallest in this set, and interior storage space for smaller items is less useful than the competition’s.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The standard gasoline-powered 5.6-liter V-8 is quiet and refined; it makes 400 horsepower and 413 lb-ft of torque. It is accompanied by a nine-speed automatic transmission and standard four-wheel drive. Nissan’s tweener drives like a more civilized heavy-duty pickup without handling better or being able to haul as much. The Titan XD has a compliant ride for a big pickup with a heavy-duty frame, though light-duty pickups ride significantly better. The XD handles like a heavy-duty pickup, too, with lazy, uncommunicative steering and vague responses to your directional commands. Likewise, it is unwieldy to drive on the highway. The results for the XD we tested put it in the middle of the class. The soft, vague feel of the brake pedal wasn’t reassuring.

What’s New for 2020?

For 2020, Nissan rejuvenates its half-ton pickup truck by giving the Titan a mild makeover. It includes a fresh face that boasts a bolder grille, new front bumper, and offers more striking headlights. The cosmetic changes continue out back with unique tailgate plaques and different taillights. The 2020 Titan also makes more horsepower and torque than before and now features a nine-speed automatic transmission instead of a seven-speed unit. The Nissan also has more standard and optional driver assists as well as an updated infotainment system. It has minor interior revisions such as a larger display in the gauge cluster, better interior cubby storage, and several newly available features.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

Unlike the variety of powertrains available on light-duty rivals, the Titan makes do with a single engine and transmission combo. The 5.6-liter V-8 produces 400 horsepower and 413 lb-ft of torque and pairs with a nine-speed automatic transmission. As with its pickup-truck brethren, the Titan trades handling and ride quality for off-road ruggedness and potent hauling capacities. While it can giddy up and go and has sufficient stopping power, its ride, steering, and handling aren’t as refined as its competition. Although the Titan and the kinda-heavy-duty Titan XD (reviewed separately) share cabs and other components, they have their own specific chassis and suspensions. The Pro-4X version swaps the stock shocks for an off-road set better suited for rough roads, but we noted that they feel stiffer than rivals with similar setups. The single-cab version we drove lost its composure on unruly roads but felt acceptably compliant on smooth surfaces.

Однако, значительно усложняет ситуацию тот факт, что производители пока не назвали стоимость своего творения.

Впрочем, по мнению многих экспертов, за новый Титан XD потенциальным владельцам придется выложить кругленькую сумму.

What’s New for 2020?

Nissan has given the Titan XD a light freshening for 2020 by redesigning the grille, adding standard 20-inch wheels, and restyling the head- and taillights. A suite of driver-assistance features is now standard and includes automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, and automatic high-beams; a panoramic sunroof is optional. Last year’s dinky 7.0-inch infotainment system has been swapped out for a new 9.0-inch unit on Pro-4X, SL, and Platinum Reserve models. The new infotainment system includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability, and a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot that can connect to up to seven different devices. The 2020 Titan XD comes solely in a crew-cab body style with the gasoline-powered 5.6-liter V-8 and four-wheel drive; the V-8 engine has been bumped to 400 horsepower for 2020, while the much maligned optional 5.0-liter diesel V-8 engine has been scrapped altogether.

Since the Titan fails to change the pickup-truck game, we think it serves owners best as a work truck. That means the base S model with the single cab and rear-wheel drive. Of course, those who want the added capability of all-wheel drive can add it for about $3500. This choice limits the number of optional upgrades, but it still features standard equipment such as an 8.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. It also has automated emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, and more. We’d recommend adding the SV Utility package, which includes a spray-in bedliner, front overhead console, and a trailer hitch with the corresponding wiring.

Overview

The 2020 Nissan Titan gives off the same vibes as other full-size trucks, but it fails to match their maximum capabilities and massive production. Still, the Nissan offers a comfortable and configurable alternative to competitors such as the Ford F-150 and the Chevrolet Silverado 1500. With a potent V-8 powertrain and serene interior, the Titan ensures that every model feels quick and refined. While its styling hardly stands out compared with modern rivals, Nissan has tweaked its half-ton truck to look bolder on the outside and snazzier on the inside. A loaded infotainment system and countless driver-assistance features helps it compete on the technology front. Unfortunately, the 2020 Titan will need more pulling power and a wider audience to unseat domestic competitors.
